Good Times and Great Oldies

Steve Cichon

He knows there’s a world outside of Buffalo, but Steve Cichon is content with keeping himself occupied with talking about, writing about, and celebrating all that’s great about 716.

Steve’s passion is telling the stories of Buffalo that showcase who we are and what makes Western New York special. He considers that his primary duty as WECK News Director and a member of the WECK Coffee Club team, while continuing to chronicle Buffalo’s past, present, and future at BuffaloStories.com.

“The story of Buffalo is rich and deep,” says Cichon. “The challenge I’ve created for myself is to not just rely on collecting facts or inspiring nostalgia—but to explore the bits and pieces that make us who we are as Western New Yorkers, look at why those things were important to us in the past, what they mean in our lives now, and how the fabric of our past can be woven into our region’s bright future.”
With his first ancestors arriving in Buffalo in the 1820s and all eight of his great-grandparents living in Buffalo, Steve’s roots clearly run deep in Western New York. He credits the great storytelling of his parents and grandparents as the inspiration in his making a career of telling our area’s stories.

Professionally, Steve started at WBEN Radio at 15-- and soon after was doing airborne traffic reports and producing Buffalo Bills football broadcasts with Van Miller. He’d eventually become WBEN’s News Director, but with stops at WIVB-TV and Empire Sports Network/WNSA-FM first.
Outside of broadcasting, Steve’s written five books on Buffalo’s history and has written more than 1400 articles on Western New York history for The Buffalo News. He’s spent time as an adjunct professor at Medaille College and was a candidate for Erie County Clerk in 2017, garnering 103,000 votes—just 3.7% shy of victory.

Steve and his wife Monica live with their SPCA mutt in Buffalo’s Parkside neighborhood in a 1909 American Foursquare designed by E.B. Green.
